to India; his Prophethood was meant to fulfill the laws of Moses.
In our age, Mahatma Gandhi may well be called the modern Moses. He achieved India's independence from British rule which had enslaved millions, and Gandhi inspired other social leaders throughout the world to approach reform through non-violence. No world leader has stood up against the social injustices and prejudices weighed upon certain castes and races, or the poor, or underprivileged as Gandhi did. This volume reveals the meetings of Meher Baba with Mahatma Gandhi and their conversations. Baba respected Gandhi's sincerity and capability, choosing him to be the first man to read a part of his secret book. The consequent volumes of this biography will disclose how Baba kept a watchful eye upon Gandhi and his activities in India, even warning him that he would be assassinated.
She, his Radha, his Sita, who loved the Beloved most must be mentioned: Mehera J. Irani died May 20th, 1989. Whoever met her saw that her life was the purest reflection of love for Baba. Her love was the purest and deepest. Mehera took interest in all work done in Meher Baba's name, and once conveyed to me that "even though now it is overlooked and taken with indifference, when this biography is completed, it will have the recognition and acceptance it deserves." This biography would not be the same without the many photographs; they bring to life that which cannot be described. Out of the depths and intimacy of her experience of divine love, she alone could write such things:
"Each and every photograph of Avatar Meher Baba – the Beloved God-Man – is very precious. It is a portrayal of the Divine coming amongst us in human form.
"True, no photograph can do justice to the God-Man who is the personification of love, perfection and beauty. Beloved Baba's hair, his twinkling brown eyes, his warm smile which lights up our world, his slim shapely hands and the swift tread of his lotus feet, his eloquent gestures and majestic presence – were all beautiful expressions which spoke more than words of his love and concern for each one.
"But Beloved Baba's photographs are a ray of the Sun of his Being, and gazing at them, we feel the warmth, the light, and comfort of his presence. For those who have been with Baba, and for those who have not, Baba's photographs are all the more meaningful now that he has dropped his human form."
May the photographs of Avatar Meher Baba convey what cannot be said, what cannot be written.
